IPhone 11 vs iPhone XR specifications: which iPhone is the best buy? - CNET

When Apple launched its iPhone 11 , 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max in September 2019, the company surprised many people by developing the base iPhone 11 for just $ 699 (£ 729, AU $ 1,199). It's $ 50 cheaper than the iPhone XR 2018 when it debuted. Due to the last line, the company also lowered the price of the iPhone XR to USD 599 (GBP 629, AU $ 1,049). Given these prices, we compare the iPhone 11 with the iPhone XR to determine which phone is the best buy today.

With two reversing cameras, a night mode recording and a 12 megapixel front shooter, the iPhone 11 has more material for photos and videos in the case. Compared to the iPhone XR, which is already taking fantastic photos and videos, the benefits for the additional $ 100 it will pay are minimal. In addition, the iPhone 11 has a new U1 chip as well as Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit LTE functions. You will see these next generation features on future iPhone and Android devices. So if you want to have a modern phone in the next few years, the iPhone 11 is the best option. Since Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit LTE aren't fully integrated networks yet, you won't see any immediate benefit, another reason why we still prefer the iPhone XR. Read our review of Apple iPhone 11 .

You may have an older processor and specs, but for the $ 100 you save with the iPhone XR , we think it's worth it. It runs on iOS 13 with the same smoothness as the iPhone 11 on its A12 chipset, and although it doesn't have an ultra-large camera and updated camera technology, the iPhone XR also works well for posting photos on Instagram and social media. If you are on a tight budget, the iPhone XR is generally always good value for money. We recommend that you either put $ 100 in something else or upgrade to the 128GB model, and there are still $ 50 left. Read our review of the Apple iPhone XR .

How do we test?

Design: almost identical and yet so durable

The iPhone 11 and the XR look almost identical: the fastest way to identify them is through the additional camera and the square protrusion of the iPhone 11. But on top of that, and the different color options (the iPhone 11 is available in lavender, mint green and pastel yellow while the Phone XR is available in canary yellow, coral, and blue, there are no obvious differences, they are the same size and weight, and the phones have the same 6.1-inch LCD screen with the same resolution and same pixel density.

In addition to the number of reversing cameras, the iPhone 11 and the XR are similar.

We're doing a number of case tests on the iPhone 11 and XR, and both phones are pretty robust. We dropped the iPhone 11 front and back to 3 feet, 6 feet and 8 feet, 7 inches of smooth concrete. With all the drops, the back glass of the phone and the screen didn't break. There was a little cosmetic scratch on the 8-foot camera lens, but the camera lens was completely thin.

When we launched the iPhone XR 2018, we placed it on a concrete sidewalk. At the waist (about 3 feet), the glass on the phone's camera broke, but the rear glass survived. The screen was also intact. At eye level (or about 5 feet), the iPhone XR survived a fall on its back with no further damage, but when we dropped it on the screen, the screen finally broke. Although this is unfortunate, the fact that the iPhone XR survived the falls to the waist was still good.

Both phones are waterproof, but the iPhone 11 has a higher IP rating than IP68 and can survive 30 minutes underwater at a distance of 2 meters. Meanwhile, the iPhone XR has protection class IP67 and can survive on paper for 30 minutes under water to a depth of 1 meter. When we dived it, however , the iPhone XR continued to function at a depth of 5 meters after 19 minutes under water. During our tests on the water, we couldn't drown the iPhone 11 or iPhone 11 Pro ; the two phones survived 30 minutes at 12 meters under water. When it comes to water resistance, the iPhone 11 far exceeds its own promises and the durability of the iPhone XR.

Camera: The latest updates give the iPhone 11 a head start

Both phones have a 12-megapixel camera, but the iPhone 11 has a second ultra-wide 12-megapixel camera and a new night mode for shooting in low light. Overall, the well-lit exterior photos of both cameras are just as vivid, with even, bright colors on both cameras.

However, the iPhone 11 took significantly sharper photos with finer details, especially when the images were displayed in full resolution. It also brightened the night better and dimmed the photos with the new mode. The second ultra-wide camera is useful when you want to adjust more content in each image or to record larger scenes. The flash is also a bit brighter, although we rarely use the function. Finally, we like that we can now take pictures of animal portraits on the iPhone 11 (the iPhone XR does not recognize non-human faces for portraits, which is a burden). The iPhone 11 also uses a feature called Deep Fusion that further enhances the details and reduces noise in photos.

For videos, the images on phone 11 have a slightly better dynamic range so that lighting and exposure appear more even and natural. The video stabilization is also a bit more stable with the standard 12 megapixel camera. However, the wide-angle camera does not have optical image stabilization. During 4K video recording, you can only switch between cameras if you shoot at 30 frames per second (although both cameras can capture 60 frames per second). ,

The iPhone 11 has a 12-megapixel camera, while the iPhone XR has a 7-megapixel camera. Although we welcome the additional resolution of the iPhone 11, we've never had a lot of complaints with the iPhone XR's front camera, and if you're an informal selfie, the iPhone XR is certainly satisfactory. The front camera of the iPhone 11 can also be taken out for a wider view, record 4K videos at 60 fps and record videos in slow motion. However, since we mainly use the front camera for selfies, we don't use these last two functions often.

In this photo you can see that the iPhone 11 captured more details in the installation lines and tubes.

iPhone 11 is faster

The iPhone 11 introduces the new Bionic A13 processor from Apple, while the iPhone XR has the A12 2018 chipset. The iPhone 11 and the XR run mostly as smoothly and quickly on iOS 13 as the others. We could not find any speed difference in everyday tasks such as surfing the Internet, switching on the camera or opening apps. On paper, the iPhone 11 is without a doubt the fastest phone. As you can see in the benchmark results below, the latest iPhone far outperformed the iPhone XR and scored a lot more points in all of the tests we did.

While we're currently changing our battery test method for phones, we're testing both the iPhone 11 and iPhone XR with a new video transmission test. Here's what we wrote in our iPhone 11 review: After doing our formal battery tests and living with the iPhone 11 for more than a month, we found that the iPhone 11's battery life was almost the same as that of the iPhone XR. In our video streaming tests, the iPhone 11 lasted 13 hours and 52 minutes, compared to the iPhone XR's 12 hours and 7 minutes time in the same test. The iPhone 11 lasted about a day and a half in daily use.

IPhone 11 is better prepared for the future, but the benefits come later

According to Apple, the iPhone 11 has a U1 chip for "spatial perception" and helps iPhones to find other iPhones more precisely when they are nearby. The chip also allows you to "point your iPhone at someone else and AirDrop prioritizes that device so you can share files faster". Many believe that the U1 chip forms the basis for a long-standing Apple mosaic tracker.

The iPhone 11 has Wi-Fi 6 , the next generation of wireless networks. Ry Crist , CNET's senior editor, said : "Wi-Fi 6 supports faster maximum transfer speeds. It enables devices to send more information about each transmission. It enables routers and other access points to operate more devices at the same time. It helps sensors and other wireless devices save battery power when scheduling transmissions, and enables better and more powerful performance quickly in dense and congested environments such as airports and stadiums. "But you probably don't see any benefit on your iPhone 11 now. Wi-Fi 6 was recently certified in September and Wi-Fi 6 routers are expensive.

The iPhone 11 is equipped with Gigabit LTE , an expanded version of 4G LTE. Gigabit LTE is very fast and can reach a maximum speed of 1 gigabit per second, which roughly corresponds to the speed of a fixed internet connection. Apple introduced Gigabit LTE 2017 on its iPhone XS and XS Max, but the iPhone XR was oddly excluded from the update. But the iPhone 11 has it, and while it may not always reach these speeds, its overall speed is faster than that of an older phone and it has a lot more freedom in terms of speed.

The iPhone 11 is available in a 256 GB model . At $ 849, it's more expensive. However, if you take a lot of photos and take a lot of videos, additional on-board storage is helpful, especially if you don't really use the cloud. Apple currently sells only 64GB and 128GB models of the iPhone XR.
